At long last I’m excited to say that I can start sharing Belizean Heat, the follow up to Sonidos de Cuba! I’m really pleased with how this album turned out. It’s quite eclectic, stylistically spanning from ambient and downtempo to progressive house and synthwave, but manages to be cohesive as a whole. It features a wide array of acoustic and electronic instruments, including trumpet, trombone, melodica, xaphoon, shakers, hand percussion, electric guitar and bass, Sonic Forest, Arturia MicroBrute, Elektron Octatrack Analog Four and RYTM, MFB Kraftzwerg, Dave Smith Poly Evolver, Novation Nova, and modular synthesizer. Belizean Heat Live at the Maker Faire (and Octatrack Nerdery)
I was asked to play the Vancouver Mini Maker Faire again this year and I felt like playing something new. The last two years in a row I had played Sonidos de Cuba, although each performance was quite different as one used Ableton and the other used the Octatrack. Since returning from Belize I had started using those fresh recordings to create new music and I was excited to play it out and get some feedback. Time To Talk About Jobs!
Back in the spring I came across this video when my friend posted it on his Facebook timeline. My wife and I got a pretty big kick out of the dark cynical sense of humour contained in Russell Holman’s Spoken Word piece. As we’re both artists we’ve often felt the pressure of expectations that we get “Real Jobs” and start a family and such, so the anti-career theme here certainly struck a chord.
Naturally, I thought it would make great material for a remix so I commented, a dialog was started, and this is the result.

On Sunday morning, not wanting to experience another fruitless round of wandering around searching for open breakfast spots I did some googling and yelping and found a promising restaurant called The Don’s. I had been using google maps to guide myself around Winnipeg and probably should have paid the extra $14/day for the Garmin guidance system as I had been regularly getting lost and taking longer than anticipated getting from A to B.
